The purpose of the Aesculap Community is to help impaired health professionals (stuggling with substance use disorders and co-occuring mental health difficulties) regain their lives (personal and occupational)

We are a group of committed individuals who have all in some way been touched by the destructive nature of addictions and who have come together to start a modified Therapeutic Community. This represents a specialist treatment service where addicted physicians, dentists, nurses and other health professionals can recover in a healing and safe environment.

Our experience and research has shown that impaired Health Professionals in the UK (and in many other countries) are a marginalised group in terms of treatment options.

BMJ research article

NCAS, the National Clinical Assessment Service, recently organised a Conference on supporting the health of health practitioners after realising that this was seriously overdue in the UK. By comparison programmes supporting health practioners have been running for 30 years in the USA and CANADA.

It is known that the prognosis for addicted health professionals - given the appropriate therapeutic setting -  is vastly superior to that of other addicted groups. This has been evidenced by longitudinal research in the USA where, with the exception of two states, every medical board has access to a dedicated recovery/rehabilitation service for its members. Full recovery for over 85% of all cases has been reported over periods varying between 10 and 30 years.

Our aim is to provide sustainable recovery treatment for health professionals from the UK and other countries at a cost that is commensurate with the impaired person's financial situation.

Our Vision

We are a structured therapeutic community, recognised by the international community of Health professionals as a welcoming, safe and compassionate place where healers go to be healed.

Many health professionals may also face

  • Disciplinary action of loss of right to practice
  • Impaired ability to skillfully and safely perform their job tasks
  • Burnout
  • Career decisions and transitions
